Karen Berry

Karen Berry

Director of Missions

Karen grew up in Raleigh, North Carolina with her parents and younger brother. After college, she put her studies to work as a business reporter for a local newspaper. Wanting an adventure, Karen moved to Buena Vista, Colorado in 2009 with her friends and now-husband, Will. She and Will married in North Carolina but the Rocky Mountains drew them to stay in Buena Vista.

Karen soon transitioned to fundraising for a small non-profit as a grant writer and communications consultant. In January 2012, Karen and Will moved to Denver where Karen worked at Regis University for 3.5 years, most recently as the Director of Annual Giving.

From a young age, Karen has had a heart for the poor and the marginalized. In high school and college she was regularly involved with after-school tutoring programs in underserved neighborhoods. Karen also took part in several InterVarsity trips serving in underprivileged areas of Philadelphia and the Bronx.

Karen first got connected to the refugee community in college through a man at her church who was trying to gain asylum status after fleeing his African country. After converting from Islam to Christianity, his life was threatened by his family members and community so he fled. Karen learned about his story and had the privilege of writing about him at her newspaper internship to help gain community awareness around the issue. While working as a reporter, she had the opportunity to write a story series about the refugee community being resettled in High Point, North Carolina through World Relief. The positive response from the community was overwhelming.

While at Regis, Karen continually felt drawn to work with the refugee and underserved populations, so she volunteered in different capacities in Denver. Karen loves that she gets to apply her background and passions to the position of Director of Compassion and Justice at Denver Presbyterian Church.

Karen lives with her husband in southeast Denver with their dog, Charlie, and loves running, hiking, biking, skiing, playing with her dog, spending time with friends, and enjoying delicious beverages.
